The USCG Auxiliary
We are the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Auxiliary is the 30,000
member volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard, dedicated to promoting boating safety and environmental protection. We educate the public.
We perform surface and air operations, including safety patrols and search and
rescue missions. We work and train alongside the Active Duty and Coast Guard Reserve,
receive specialty training, and participate in all Coast Guard missions except military and
direct law enforcement.
On any given day, members of Team Coast Guard will:
- Save 15 lives
- Assist 117 people in distress
- Conduct 14 commercial fishing vessel examinations
- Verify 140 aids-to-navigation.
- Execute 90 search and rescue missions
- Educate 1,369 recreational boaters through safety classes
- Protect $2.8 million dollars in property
- Respond to 11 oil & hazardous materials spills
- Investigate 20 marine casualties, including collisions and groundings
As Auxiliary members, we are not paid in dollars, but rather in training,
experience, and the knowledge that we make a difference in people's
lives, every day.
Auxiliary Flotilla 5-25 is located on the Mystic River in Eastern Massachusetts. 'The Mystic' begins at the Lower Mystic Lake, flowing east
through the communities of Arlington, Medford, Somerville, Everett, Charleston, Chelsea, and Boston. The surroundings turn from rural, to
suburban, to urban heavy industry in seven short miles!
Our area of responsibility takes us from the Mystic, Charles and Chelsea rivers through
Boston Harbor and to the outer islands.
Our flotilla consists of about twenty-five active members. We have immediate leadership opportunities for folks willing to give a little more time to make a difference in the lives of others. In return, we offer training, fellowship and opportunities for advancement. In addition to teaching and operations, we also offer opportunities to work in administrative, (web) developing and other support roles. You will be able to pursue other opportunities within the flotilla and
the Auxiliary. We have something to fit almost everyone's interests, and there is no
military commitment.
